“This change has been made necessary to accommodate the size of the event. In 2004, we had 600 thousand people. For 2005, we are expecting that figure to be much higher. The new itinerary of the Rio Pride Parade will be better in operational terms, facilitating access to the show site. This change also represents the planning for the future of the event, and so, in conjunction with the Mayor of Rio’s office, we decided on the change,” says Cláudio Nascimento, president of Grupo Arco-Iris and general coordinator of the 10th Pride Parade – Rio 2005. Celebration and Demands: considered today the second-largest Pride Parade in Latin America, the Pride Parade Rio is associated with organization, freedom, joy, human rights, social justice and pacifism. Ranked on Rio’s tourist calendar just below New Year’s Eve and Carnival, the Pride Parade Rio is one of the largest events in the city and has the support of several sectors of society, the artistic community, cultural institutions, social movements, and the Federal and Municipal governments. According to Cláudio Nascimento, the Rio Pride Parade will have the theme The right to love whoever you want – Domestic Partnerships Now !, defending the passage of Bill nº 1151 of 1995, which institutes domestic partnerships between persons of the same sex, and highlighting the importance of the passage of Bill 5003 of 2001 which makes it a crime to discriminate against gays, lesbians, bisexuals or transgender people. The campaign of the Pride Parade Rio furthermore will point out the importance of the effective putting into practice of the principle of the Lay State in which the State and its officials should administer actions and policies for all of society, without discrimination, without links to religious groups. Institutional Support : In order to hold the Pride Parade Rio –2005, Grupo Arco-iris has the important support of the Ministry of Culture (through the Special Secretariat of Identity and Cultural Diversity), the Ministry of Health and the City of Rio de Janeiro . But the organizers still need new investments to guarantee better organization, impact and visibility of the Pride Parade-Rio. This feature was first published in Portuguese on www.arco-iris.org.br.
