Anti-homophobia Day PDF Print E-mail

The International Day to Combat Homophobia, which takes place on May 17, will be celebrated in Rio de Janeiro. Among the activities will be a walk on the Ipanema beach front. A three thousand piece floral wreath representing the Brazilian flag will be assembled there.

The idea is to remember the murders committed on grounds of sexual orientation or gender identity. According to the group Arco-Iris, an NGO’s advisory board, one of event organizers, personalities like the Minister of Environment, Carlos Minc, and other representatives for human rights organizations are expected to attend.

“We want to draw attention to our plight and show to everyone that we exist, have rights and deserve respect. The walk, in addition to serving as a landmark for the May 17 celebrations, also symbolizes our strength to mobilize in support of the Campaign Not Homophobia!” said Gilze Rodrigues, chairman of Arco-Iris NGO. The walk starts at 3 pm on Rua Vinicius de Moraes and ends at Farme de Amoedo.
