Rio, Live the Passion

Every year an ever increasing number of gay guys head down to Rio in search of an exciting and ‘hot’ gay holiday destination. They are going to the right place. In the recent years Rio has become an excellent choice for the gay traveller. As the weather is hot all year round, the beaches are all loaded with eye candy all day long.

Rio is more than just a beach resort, it’s a city of more than six million people. No matter what time of the year, there will always be lots to do. True, the peak season of the gay Rio vacation is New Year’s and Carnival but that’s not to say the rest of year is dead. The Rio gay scene is centred in Ipanema, with its huge gay beach, trendy restaurants, and quite unique gay bars. The streets Teixeira de Mello and Farme de Amoedo are jam-packed with gorgeous gay guys. It’s the favourite hang out for all fashion victims, body-beautiful's and barbies. Just at the end of Rua Farme de Amoedo is the gay section of Ipanema beach.

Forget about Rua Visconde da Silva in Botafogo, as you often find it on some rather out-of-date online guides; it's long died out. Ipanema, that's where it is at.

look out for flyers given out by club promoters on the beach; a good way of finding out what's on...

Going to the beach is a cult for both gay and straight Cariocas. Rio has one of the strongest beach cultures ever seen in any coastal city around the world. That probably explains the fact there aren’t more gay night clubs and bars on the Rio gay scene - Cariocas enjoy the day too much. And the gay beach itself is like a huge gay bar/club where you can chat and cruise for hours and go swimming to boot.

After working on your suntan for a couple of hours you’ll probably feel like eating again. Although there are no gay restaurants on the sea front in Ipanema, which makes a change from Copacabana, it makes for keeping the area less commercial. However, you’ll find plenty of choices on the streets in from the seafront. You could try one of the by-kilo buffet restaurants; it’s a quick way to get and excellent meal without having to change out of swimming trunks. New Natural is a great choice of such restaurants.

Back to the gay beach, the fun goes on; on Ipanema even the sunset is an event in itself – and you’re still have the whole night ahead!

As the night doesn't really take off till very late, around midnight to 1AM, you'll have a bit of time for a power nap before you head off to a restaurant or bar. Of course, if after the whole day of eyeing up gorgeous guys you're just too horny, you can always pop in to one of the saunas. Studio 64 Sauna (on a Sunday is a very popular one.

One of the best ways of finding out about what's happening on the club scene is to look out for flyers which are given out by club promoter on the beach. Alternatively, check the clubs and parties sections of this site.
